Environmental Awareness In College

Hello hello! How are you? It’s been a busy week around here.

Let me share with you some great news! The title is a HUGE spoiler, but here it goes!

While I’m developing my project and sort things out for what I’m going to do from now on, I’ve decided to invest some time doing environmental awareness, because whatever I may end doing in my life, I feel that one of my missions in life (oh yeah, plural!) is to share, be it knowledge, ideas, experiences…

“The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away.” –Pablo Picasso

I’m not saying that I have an exceptional talent, but I’m sure I am passionate about it. Besides, I find giving through sharing such a rewarding way to give, because you are able to cause an impact on people, to change someone’s perspectives and perhaps to have a positive impact in their lives.

Following this chain of thought, I contacted some colleges in Lisbon in order to talk to their students about these issues.

In recent times, concepts such as Climate Change, Pollution, Sustainability, etc., and movements (such as Zero Waste, Low Impact) which goals are to change people's behavior in order to achieve a more environmentally friendly lifestyle, are becoming more and more famous among people. However, our society has some deeply rooted lifestyles, which were adopted for convenience and by the trend of the times.

The academic years are a crucial phase in the life of individuals, not only for their academic development, which may define their professional future, but also because it is a phase in life in which young people are more open to new concepts and discoveries, that will trace their personal development and define what kind of individual it might become. Taking into account the period of environmental crisis in which we live in, I think it is imperative that there should be greater environmental awareness. In addition, even though we know more and more about environmental issues, people do not quite understand the urgency to change and adopt a more environmentally friendly lifestyle. Especially students of environmental sciences who, despite studying about issues associated with the environment and specializing in that field, do not live in harmony with the knowledge they have and are acquiring.

These lectures aim to show that it is possible nowadays to follow an ecological lifestyle, regardless of the income we have. All of us can, through small actions of our daily life, contribute to a sustainable future. It is not only the children who are the future, we are all the future. And yes,one person makes a difference (it’s not even a matter of it the person CAN MAKE a difference. The person DOES MAKE a difference!).

This event is initially aimed at students, but anyone can attend, be it employee or teacher.

Well the first one answering is dear to me, since I did one of my Post-graduations there. The first event will take place in the Faculty of Sciences of University of Lisbon, on the 22nd of May at 2:30 pm at the room 2.3.13, and it has the support of the Department of Animal Biology (DBA) and two very important research centres: the Centre for Ecology, Evolution and Environmental Changes (cE3c), and Marine and Environmental Sciences Centre (MARE). It’s delightful to have received such a positive feedback from them.

If you are interested in attending, feel free to join me there. If you know someone who might be interested, please share this post.

Thank you, have a great week and see you there(?)!
